What Tire Rotation Pattern Should I Utilize?
The right tire rotation pattern for your vehicle depends on several factors, including the type of tires you have and how your vehicle is configured. Front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive, and four-wheel drive vehicles may require different rotation patterns. Tire design also matters, including whether your tires are directional or non-directional and whether the tires are the same size on all four corners.
If your vehicle has a full-size spare tire, it may also be possible to include it in the rotation pattern, helping distribute wear across all five tires. Temporary spare tires should not be included in a standard rotation.
Below, we’ll explain the common tire rotation patterns and help you understand which pattern may be appropriate for your vehicle and tires. Always refer to your vehicle owner’s manual and tire manufacturer’s recommendations for the correct rotation procedure.
REARWARD CROSS
For rear wheel drive vehicles, the rearward cross pattern is recommended. Rear tires are moved to the forward axle and kept on the same side of the vehicle while the front tires are moved to opposite sides of the rear axle.
X-PATTERN
Recommended for 4-wheel and all wheel drive vehicles such as light-weight trucks and sedans, all tires are moved diagonally, meaning tires are switched from one axle to the opposite as well as being repositioned from one side to the other.
FORWARD CROSS
This is the most common pattern for front-wheel drive vehicles. The front axle tires are moved directly back while the rear tires are moved up diagonally to the opposite side of the front axle.
